Q: What is Astrology?
A: Here is a dictionary definition: 'Divination that consists of interpreting the influence of stars and planets on earthly affairs and human destinies. In ancient times it was inseparable from astronomy. It originated in Mesopotamia (c. 3rd millennium BC) and spread to India, but it developed its Western form in Greek civilization during the Hellenistic period. Astrology entered Islamic culture as part of the Greek tradition and was returned to European culture through Arabic learning during the Middle Ages. According to the Greek tradition, the heavens are divided according to the 12 constellations of the zodiac, and the bright stars that rise at intervals cast a spiritual influence over human affairs. Astrology was also important in ancient China, and in imperial times it became standard practice to have a horoscope cast for each newborn child and at all decisive junctures of life. Though the Copernican system shattered the geocentric world-view that astrology requires, interest in astrology has continued into modern times and astrological signs are still widely believed to influence personality.' –
Q: What evidence is there that Astrology works?
A: The best article explaining why it is unacceptable to dismiss Astrology is by eminent British Astrologer Robert Currey and is well worth the read especially for anyone grappling with Astrology’s validity. Click here for the full article ‘Basis of Astrology’.
Q: How does Astrology work for us as individuals?
A: It works by giving us a framework to our personalities and life events by the positions the planets were in according to the Tropical Zodiac, in relation to our position on planet Earth (Geocentric) when we were born, the aspects they make, their progressed natal position and where they are at any given moment in time. Generally we use a chart to interpret the planets positions in relation to our precise position on Earth and in doing so we can find other sensitive points that are not real heavenly bodies but still have a huge influence on us. So it works by using a chart of the sky as a map and it is up to us or the Astrologer to interpret what that map says about us and the direction that map will lead us to ‘chart a course’ for. After all Astrology is an art form not a science and should never be treated as such even though it contains many scientific elements in the working out of planetary positions etc. As an art form it requires imagination and creativity to help with interpretations as well as a strong understanding of how the planets and star signs behave and relate to each other. It’s best to remember that Astrology does not show certainties but possibilities, sometimes many conflicting possibilities and it is up to the skill of the Astrologer to decide which possibility is the most likely outcome.
Q: How do Horoscopes work?
A: With Sun sign horoscopes you might read in a newspaper, magazine or on-line that are written by an Astrologer, the Astrologer will cast a chart for the day in question with 0° Aries Ascendant in the Equal House or set it for midday with Whole Signs house system (or midnight if using transits), using topocentric positions and use Chart turning ie. mentally turn the chart. So all Aries Suns have the 1st house as their First House, whilst Taurus Suns have the 2nd house as their First House and Gemini Suns will have the 3rd house as their First House and so on and so forth. They will then interpret by what houses the planets are in for those Sun signs on that day, so as Uranus is in Taurus it will be in Aries Sun 12th house, Taurus Sun 1st house, Gemini Sun 2nd house etc. However the outer planets are very slow moving so most of the interpretation will rely on the fast moving Moon which will change houses every couple of days and any aspects made, which will be very frequent and changeable throughout the day. If it’s for a weekly or monthly Horoscope then they will cast a chart for the start of the week/month at midnight and then use transits for the end of the week/month, there by showing how far the planets have moved over that week or month and through what houses whilst using an Ephemeris to help guide them.
