The Lunar Nodes or Nodes of the Moon are an interestingly simple concept that are based on complex equations. The South Node in a persons chart shows what they have been born with, their inherent abilities or purpose that they might not even be aware of. The traits and coping mechanisms formed in childhood that we are likely to go back to relying on when we are pulled out of our comfort zone.
Whilst the North Node reveals the future gains a person can make during the course of their life or where they will try to acquire skills or meaning to their existence. The areas of life where we should make a concerted effort to succeed and by what necessary force our aims will be achieved when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone.
It is important to note that true integration into the personality of both nodes, by the releasing of the South Nodes baggage and the attainment of the North Nodes goals is the desired outcome for us all.
When the Lunar Node or Moon's Node is mentioned in an Astrological Ephemeris it refers to the transits of North Node, as the South Node is always exactly opposite it is simple to figure out where the South Node is although it is rarely used outside of Natal Charts.
The Mean Lunar Node is the calculated mean position of the North Node, which is the more commonly used calculation as the True Lunar Node’s position is considered less reliable, although it is always in close proximity to the Mean.
The Lunar Nodes are not real objects that exist in our solar system, they are sensitive points calculated by the position of the Moon as it orbits planet Earth, the Suns position as it orbits Earth (remember Western Tropical Astrology is Geocentric, so as seen from here on Earth as the planets appear to travel around us) and the Ecliptic (an imaginary line around the Earth projected out from Earth on what is known as the celestial sphere that is divided into the 12 signs of the zodiac in 30 degree segments through which the planets appear to travel from 00.00°-29.59°- the second set of numbers are minutes so only go up to 59).
The North Node (transiting Mean Lunar Node) is found by when the Moon moving North hits the plane of the ecliptic and then the South Node is found a fortnight later when the Moon hits the plane of the ecliptic as it is moving South.
As if to confuse matters further because the North Node is ascending it is referred to by some Astrologers as the Ascending Node, equally the South Node can be called the Descending Node.
The Mean Lunar Node is unique as the direction it travels through the zodiac is always Retrograde (backwards), where as the True Lunar Node, although also moving Retrograde through the signs frequently goes into Direct (forward) motion before reversing again,
it is this inconsistency caused by using an ecliptic orbit for the Moon when the Moon doesn't take an ecliptic orbit around the Earth that creates it’s inaccuracy and is ultimately many Astrologers prefer to use the mean average calculation which is the Mean Lunar Node.
In the Natal chart any planets or points conjunct or trine the North Node will bring easy help and understanding in life’s achievements through the planets meaning, sign and house. Where there are squares to the nodes look for signs of struggle and hardship at obtaining success and fulfilling potential.
A planet or point conjunct the South Node will bring difficulty in using the gifts they have been born with in that area of life and may indicate a troubled childhood depending on the other aspects to that planet or point.
Some Astrologers believe when a Planet or House cusp is activated by the transiting Mean Lunar Mode it can bring sickness, although personally I would only feel comfortable with this being accurate for Mars, Saturn & Neptune and for the Ascendant, 6th house & 12th house cusps.
The general themes for Lunar Node transits to natal planets or points is to bring future goals into focus in the sphere of life the transit occurs. To delineate an aspect to a natal planet first understand the natal meaning of the planet in the chart before applying the northern nodal desire of future success.
The 'Mean Lunar Node' is not to be confused with the 'Mean Lunar Apogee' - Lilith. Although they are based on calculations involving the Moon they are not related. For those of you who follow Vedic Astrology I have learnt that the North Node equates to Rahu the Dragons head, whilst the South Node is Ketu the Dragons tail.
