A ‘Sensitive Point’ means that it is not a real heavenly body out in space like a planet or asteroid it is instead a degree found by complex equations some of which have a powerful influence all of their own and some that are most powerful when they are triggered by a contact from a planet. These are the most widely used ‘Sensitive Points’ in Astrology.
ASCENDANT abbreviation AC or ASC – The point rising on the horizon at the time of an event. In a Natal Chart it governs your life path, basic personality and appearance and any planets close to the AC will have a strong effect on these and may dominate the whole chart. In the Placidus House system the AC is always the cusp of the 1st house.
To some extent your AC is your external personality that people who know you casually will think of you as and the Sun as your ego is your internal personality that only people who get to know you well such as close friends and family recognize.
DESCENDANT abbreviation DC or DSC – The point descending at the time of an event. In a Natal Chart it represents the way we interact with close companions especially our lover and what type of intimate partner we are attracted to. In the Placidus House system the DC is always the cusp of the Seventh House (H7).
THE MIDHEAVEN (Medium Coeli) abbreviation MC – The highest point in a chart linked to beginnings, public achievement, hopes. In a Natal Chart it is strongly linked to what career you will be most attracted to and where you will gain recognition and success. In the Placidus House system the MC is always the cusp of the Tenth House (H10).
IMUM COELI abbreviation IC – The lowest point in a chart linked to endings, aloneness, private endurance. In a Natal Chart it is strongly linked to the our past history, subconscious behaviour and life end. In the Placidus House system the IC is always the cusp of the Fourth House (H4).
HOUSE CUSPS – The point where a house begins in a chart when divided into 12 parts representing different areas of life. When using the Placidus house system House Cusps are particularly productive. The closer a planet is to the House Cusp of the house it is in the stronger it’s influence.
LILITH – The point of the Mean Lunar Apogee [H12] or the lesser used Oscillating Lunar Apogee [H13]
LUNAR NODES – The point of the Mean Lunar Node or the True Lunar Node, which one you use depends on you. The Lunar Node in natal astrology is The North Node (Ascending Node) in a chart representing future and it’s direct opposite is the South Node (Descending Node) representing past.
VERTEX – The meeting point, primarily used in Synastry to show a point of destiny and influence between events/peoples charts. In the Natal Chart it is considered by it’s sign and house to show an occurrence we can’t escape from and are fated to play out and events of magnitude especially when triggered by transiting planets. In relationship astrology it also shares some of the connotations of the DC.
PART OF FORTUNE/ Pars Fortunae Abbreviation PoF/PF- The luckiest point in a chart showing where unexpected and not worked for gain will come. Used in Horary Astrology as the prime source of direction, where you will find what is lost as well as a source of luck. There are two different ways of finding it.
Firstly POF is calculated by the 360 degrees of the Zodiac being converted to numbers. Aries 0° = 0 to Pisces 29° = 359 then using AC + Sun – Moon =PoF for night births (Sun below horizon: the AC/DC line in a chart) and AC + Moon – Sun = PoF for day births (Sun above horizon). Pars Fortunae which is mainly used in Horary is always AC+Moon-Sun= PF
Secondly you can visually calculate PoF by looking at the chart and counting the number of degrees between the Sun and Moon then count that number backwards from the AC if the Sun is below the horizon or forward if the Sun is above it. For True Pars Fortunae use the position of the Moon, if it is below the horizon count forwards from the AC the amount of degrees between the Sun and Moon or if the Moon is above the horizon count backwards from the AC. Part of Spirit (PoS) is always the same amount of degrees from the AC as Part of Fortune (PoF) but in the opposite direction so be careful not to get the two confused.
ARABIC PARTS/ LOTS Arabian points in a chart are based on calculations of 3 points usually two planets and the Ascendant. ie. AC + Moon – Sun = Pars Fortunae. There are 100’s of Arabian Parts in modern use though few of them are the anciently used ones which are said to have long since been lost. According to most Astrologers who use them extensively they only become active when transiting or progressing planets aspect them (primarily by conjunction); note the planets used to create the Part will also be activated.
"To arrive at a thorough interpretation of directions to and transits over the degree held by an Arabian Point these should be synthesized with those over the planet from which the Point is derived. According to Sepharial "Ptolemy borrowed the symbol of Fortuna from the Arabs but applied to it his own reasoning, while Placidus, in an attempt to deal with it mathematically, improved it out of existence." - Nicholas de Vore (Encyclopaedia of Astrology)
