WHAT IS A HORARY CHART?
A Horary chart is an astrology chart drawn up for the exact moment a question was asked and in doing so by following the rules of Horary when looking at the chart you should be able to find an answer to that question.
WHICH HOUSE SYSTEM SHOULD I USE FOR A HORARY CHART?
There is some contention on what house system is best used for Horary charts.
In England in the past it was traditional to use The Regiomontanus house system that divides the celestial equator into twelve equal segments. Then, great circles are drawn from the North point through these segment points to the South point. The intersection of these lines with the ecliptic (zodiac) make up the house cusps according to Regiomontanus. So, the sky is - similar to the Campanus system - divided like an orange, but the different segments of the 'orange' have different sizes. The Regiomontanus system is considered a house system defined by space. The house system is named after the German mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Regiomontanus (Johannes Müller of Königsberg, 1436-1476), but was invented by the Spanish Jewish astrologer Abrahma ibn Esra (-1167). More information can be found in the Astro Wiki
Regio, as it is more often referred to by Modern Astrologers, was the house system used expertly by 17th century English Traditional Astrologer William Lily on which most if not all modern Horary Astrology rules are based, taken from his books CHRISTIAN ASTROLOGY 1 & 2.

However, in modern English Astrology it is now traditional to use Placidus, because of the failings of the Regio house systems mathematical calculations which were improved by Placidus, who became the darling of modern astrology in England and as a result the house cusps are deemed so sensitive, it is believed they will provide more reliably.
"As an aside, I should mention that when British astrologers discovered the writings of Placidus in the late 1600s, they realized that Regiomontanus was mistaken in his understanding of Ptolemy's ideas and decided to adopt Placidus houses as their standard. The Catholic hierarchy was so confounded by the novel ideas of the brilliant monk Placidus that the Church placed his writings on the Index of Forbidden Books in all the Catholic countries of Europe. In contrast, awed by the genius of Placidus, astrologers in Protestant England in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries made Placidus the go-to system of house division in the English-speaking world. As a result, books of tables of Regiomontanus houses were deliberately replaced with those of Placidus." - Anthony Louis, 2020

HOW DO I CREATE A HORARY CHART?
To use Horary astrology you need to have a certain amount of belief in fate as the exact time, date and place you choose to ask the question is fated as much as to what the answer will be. The person who was asking the question is called the ‘querent’ and can be either a client or the Astrologer if they are asking personally. So if I asked the question I would be the querent but if someone else told me that they asked a question and gave me the details for the time, date, place then they would be the querent even if it is me who draws up the chart.
Go to Astro.com and as a free 'guest user' or join for free and login to create a chart by using the 'Extended Charts' section. Create the chart for the date>time>place that the question was asked.
WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO MY HORARY CHART QUESTION?
Before you start trying to figure out the answer to the question first look at the chart and see if any of these are present.
If any of these are present it may be best to wait a while and then ask the question again at a later time and draw up a new chart.
WHAT IS THE RULER OF THE QUERENT IN HORARY ASTROLOGY?
Next you need to decide which planet or planets rule the querent and the question. The querent is always co-ruled by the Moon as well as by the ruler of the Ascendant, the Almuten of the ascendant and the rulers of any planets in the first house. You also need to decide what is the natural ruler for the issue and what houses are important in the matter. You may need to turn the chart, in other words if you are asking about the career of your partner then you will not be looking in the tenth house (your own career) but using the seventh house (your partner) as his or her first house and counting on ten houses from there. So H7 plus 10 is counted around the chart to H4. So matters involving the partner’s career are ruled by House 4.
WHAT IS THE ALMUTEN IN HORARY ASTROLOGY?
the ALMUTEN is the strongest planet when all essential dignities are considered.

WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO MY HORARY CHART QUESTION?
Before you start trying to figure out the answer to the question first look at the chart and see if any of these are present.
- The Ascendant must be within 3-27 degrees for the chart to be valid. If the AC is between 0°-3° it is too early to give an answer and if it is between 27-29° it is too late. If the question is about new beginnings it may still work with an Ascendant less than 3º. This does not apply if the Ascendant of the querent is less than 3º or more than 27º.
- Is the Moon in late degrees? A chart may be unsafe to judge if the Moon is in the last degrees of a sign, especially Gemini, Scorpio and Capricorn.
- Is the Moon Void of Course? The Moon is void of course when it will not complete any major aspects before leaving its current sign. Nothing works smoothly when a Moon is void of course but a void of course Moon can still perform in Cancer, Taurus, Sagittarius or Pisces.
- Is the Moon in Via Combusta? Via Combusta is 15º Libra to 15º Scorpio. A malefic and unpredictable influence on the whole chart but especially the house this occurs from.
- Is Saturn in H1 when the astrologer is the querent? Your judgement as an astrologer may be compromised or restricted.
- Is Saturn in H7? Your judgement as an astrologer may be compromised or restricted unless you are the querent.
If any of these are present it may be best to wait a while and then ask the question again at a later time and draw up a new chart.

MY QUESTION ANSWERED BY HORARY?
You now have all the information you need and are ready to begin delineating the Horary chart to answer your Horary Chart question. Ideally you want to ask a yes or no type question, such as will I get the job I just interviewed for?
WHERE IS MY CAT?
However, the most asked question in my experience is - Where is my lost cat? An almost impossible question to answer, but have a go for fun if it wont do any harm. Make sure you never deal in certainties when asking and answering for other people, only ever possibilities! It's up to you to decide what is the most likely outcome and present it as such.
So, bearing in mind that whilst I learnt Traditional before electing for Modern Astrology I never worked as a Traditional Astrologer or a Horary Astrologer and only ever used Horary charts for fun, this would be my take on it. After you figure out the Querent ruler and the Almuten, then the natural ruler for the issue of finding a lost cat and the important houses and planets that pertain to it are; Pars Fortunae is finding what is lost, the Moon rules lost objects, House 6 rules pets, House 12 & Saturn represents loss. So if I were to see Saturn on H6 cusp, I wouldn't be hopeful of a good outcome. Conversely Pars Fortunae on H6 cusp, what is lost is then found. Primarily though to look for direction, so if the Moon unafflicted and were conjunct Pars Fortunae in H4 - you might most likely find your cat to the North of where you asked the question. Yeah, I know it's a bit vague, but go look anyway, you never know it could be there... maybe.

- A planet is Combust when it is conjunct the Sun within 8º orb. It is weakened in this position.
- Planets are considered ‘Under the Sunbeams’ when they are in the same sign as the Sun and within 17º orb. They are weakened in this position.
- Planets are Cazimi when they are within 0º.17 of the Sun. In this position, unlike combust, they are strengthened. The exception is the Moon which is Malefic in this position, being a New Moon.
